GEOG306 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Ejecta Blanket, Tunguska Event, Breccia
Document Summary
May amplify existing risks (climate change) or have the potential for world-wide catastrophe (asteroid impacts) Globalization of hazards takes 3 distinct forms: changes to the location, magnitude, and frequency of chronic hazards (air pollution, soil erosion, changes in the rate of operation of high-intensity, low-frequency hazards (tropical cyclones) Asteroid: range of solid objects varying in size from 100m to about 1000km in diameter. Comet: diffuse bodies of gas and solid particles that orbit sun, similar to asteroids, but contain ice and frozen methane. Meteoroid: smaller than asteroids, dust to boulder-size. Left-over fragments from formation of the solar system. Most orbit the sun in an asteroid belt between mars and jupiter. Meteors: objects that produce light in the sky as they streak through earth"s atmosphere. Meteorite: if an extraterrestrial object collides with the earth. Diffuse bodies of solid particles and gas.
