HLTH230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Pharmacogenomics, Antimicrobial Resistance, Genomics
Document Summary
Genomic medicine: genomics and patient care are converging. Driven by falling cost of genome sequencing. Genetic makeup can tell us a lot about our health: cheap, so it"s something that is routinely done now. Identification of genetic markers that can predict how a patient will respond to drugs. Can minimize side effects: modern medicine tends to use a one fit all approach. Genomics and pathogens: pathogen genomes can provide valuable information. Pathogen"s resistance to antimicrobial drugs (applies mostly to infectious diseases(cid:524) this is becoming more important due to superbugs becoming resistant. Looking at an individual"s genome can help to customize drugs to kill them. Cancer: 8. 2 million people died from cancer worldwide in 2012. Leading and 2nd leading causes of death in developed and developing worlds, respectively. Genes that regulate cell growth are altered (e. g. , mutation). Hence, closely related to genomics: essentially, cancer is the disease of the genome.
