HLTH245 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Homeostasis
Document Summary
To motivate is to set in motion. Motivation is external and internal factors that make an organism do something. Motivational state or drive is an internal condition that orients an individual towards a specific category of goals and can reverse over time. i. e. for drive hunger to food. Drives are hypothetical you (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t see so(cid:373)eo(cid:374)e"s se(cid:374)se of hu(cid:374)ger (cid:271)ut you (cid:272)a(cid:374) i(cid:374)fer it from behaviour. Incentives are the objects or ends that exist in the external environment: also called rewards, reinforcers, or goals. Drives can increase incentives and incentives can increase drives: hunger can increase incentive of hamburger, drive can make shit taste like good food. Drives motivate us towards goals that promote survival and reproduction. To survive some body processes must be kept in a certain range, this includes temperature, water, minerals. Homeostasis is the constancy of internal conditions that the body must actively maintain.
