Document Summary
Brain states that influence processing of stimuli and behavioral output. Motivation: factors within and outside an organism causing it to behave in a certain way at a certain time, motivational state or drive. An internal condition (changing with time), that orients an individual to a specific set of goals. Goals or reinforcers in the external environment. Food, water, a mate, good grades: motivational effect effects on behavior directed by drives towards incentives. Internal towards external: drives and incentives complimentary. If one is weak the other must be strong to motivate the action. Can influence each other"s strength: motivational drives. Homeostasis: consistent internal conditions needing maintenance. Drives reflect as imbalance and direct behavior to correct the imbalance. Behavior follows (driven by) tissue needs: increasing or decreasing caloric intake, drive for salt. Drives as brain states: central state theory of drives. Different drives correspond to neural activity in different sets of neurons in the brain (centres: central drive system.
