In development studies, culture is used to explain poverty/economic growth/violence. Post-modern and post colonial challenge modernizaion theory by poining out the addiions of culture. What is culture? (used as a tool to achieve values) A progressive process of human development, a movement towards reinement and order and away from barbarism and savagery". A state or process of human perfecion, in terms of certain absolute or universal values". The complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law and any other capabiliies and habits required as a member of society. A descripion of a paricular way of life which express certain meanings and values not only in art and learning but also in insituions and ordinary behavior". Non-eurocentric, non-eliist, non-evoluionary and are argued to be vague. The patern of meanings embodied in symbolic forms, including acions, uterances, and meaningful objects of various kinds, by virtue of which individuals communicate with one another and share their experiences, concepions and beliefs. ".
