KIN232 Lecture 2: Kin232, Midterm lecture 2
Document Summary
Lecture two sources of knowledge and theories. Sources of knowledge deductive & inductive reasoning: application of logical reasoning to come up w/ a solution, general observation deductive specific conclusion, specific observation inductive general conclusion. Why do we need theories: organizes results from many studies into a coherent idea, summarizes existing knowledge/observations, organizes multiple studies and ideas. Induction: specific observation to generalizations: predicts future events, that can or cannot be observed, deduction: general theory being applied to specific instances, generates hypotheses, tests of hypotheses support or refute theories, stimulate development of new knowledge. Testing theories: one of the aims of scientific inquiry is to test theories, hypotheses are related to theory, null hypothesis (h ): specifies results of the theory are wrong, alternate hypothesis (h1): specifies results of the theory are correct. If predicted effects are observed: if your theory holds true then you wold reject the null hypothesis, theory is supported.
