LS227 Lecture Notes - Lecture 33: Differential Association, Symbolic Interactionism, Labeling Theory
Document Summary
Interactionist theories look at the minute interactions between people and what those interchanges/ interactions mean. How you deal with somebody says something about how you think of them and the world. Unpacking the social meanings of the interactions between people. Three basic premises of symbolic interactions theories: people act accordingly to the meaning the objects and people have in your lives, the meanings that objects emerge from interactions among people, these meanings are applied and occasionally modified. Exp. a diamond ring is a symbol of engagement. This ring is symbolic, i wanna marry you . The meaning of the ring emerges from interactions between people. Symbolic interactionism is not interested in social structure at all. The central concept of interactionist theory is the deviant career. How people do or don"t decide that they are going to be deviant. How they decide if they are going to commit not normative acts.
