Legal construct - doesn"t exist in nature. Not subject to murder, but a felony offence, damage to property. Criminal law: assault and battery didn"t apply ( objects not humans) Civil law: excluded from privileges of tort law. Selectively recognized personhood (what about when the slave breaks a law?) No state shall deprive an person of life, liberty or property without due process of law, nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws . Meant to recognize slaves, but instead also now applies to corporations. Interdependency - health of a corporation, depends on health of economy. Corporations came to rely more and more on bill of rights while us economy increasingly dependant on corporations. Environmental protection agency did a y over because they were denied entrance to the research facility - violation of privacy. Higher level = dow chemical is wrong (privacy applies to only entering the actual building)
