Lecture: danger & the murder of police officers. Exposed to violence on daily basis and life threatening confrontational situations. Deal with hostile people & face stress. Stats canada (from 1961-2009) 133 police officers that were murdered in line of duty in canada. Half the rate of taxi drivers they are more likely to be murdered. Police officers are #2 in place to be murdered. Very few are actually killed some years where none were killed. 3-4 x the national average higher than the normal population, but still relatively low. Far more likely to be killed in motor vehicle accidents rather than murder. Studies show that farming is far more dangerous, forestry, mines have more accidental deaths than policing. Most dangerous activity is responding to a robbery where robber is armed. Suspicious person stops has come up in between these 2. 92% of those are killed by firearms, most often by the ones they own: research on police stress.
