The independent variable x is the symbol we use to represent an arbitrary element in the domain of f. The dependent variable y is the symbol that represents an arbitrary element in the range of f. Given a function f (x), if we specify a number in its domain, say 3, for the value of x then f (3) represents the specific value in the range which is associated to the number 3. For example if f (x) is defined as f (x) = x3, f (3) = 33 = 27. Given a function f (x), the graph of a function f is the set of all ordered pairs.
