Cbs radio in 1934 doing radio plays. Orson welles - decided to do the war of the worlds as a radio play: played it off as if it was a newscast interrupting regular programming. Herrmann travels to hollywood with welles in 1940: untested director was given complete control of his film during the studio system. Years: the movie was citizen kane (1941) - herrmann"s first film score. This film really established the techniques used in film noir. Herrmann refused the studio"s suggestion of using an orchestrator. He realized his music wouldn"t have to be performed many times (just enough to record) so the ensemble could be anything he wanted. A symphony orchestra is a standardized musical ensemble: one in every major city - music can be played anywhere (better sales) 1955 he begins collaborating with alfred hitchcock: scored almost all of hitchcock"s most influential films from the late "50s to the early "60s, vertigo (1958) and north by northwest (1959)
