Lyrics are (in part) a response to the failure of counter culture. Three key differences between them: heavy metal has a higher and intense level of distortion in guitars and voice, hard rock has mid-range tempo. While heavy metal is very fast or slow tempo (extreme tempos: lyrics: Hard rock- withdraw from the serious subjects of the counter culture back to the same subjects of chuck berry(cars,girls,no school). Heavy metal unstable states of mind, paranoia, madness, fantasy, mythology, christian/religious material, loss and futility in particular war. The counter culture never really happened in english, not enough middle class to make it happen. Doomy music what ozzy called it before heavy metal and hard rock were coined. Madness/futility of war: wwii not too long ago, about 25 years since the war, lots of adults in their lives who remembered the war vividly. War pigs heavy metal tempo change, doomy lyrics. Highway star lyrics involved cars and girls: baroque music classical period.
