Document Summary
Con ict - from latin ( together & to strike ) Violence is not a necessary component of violence. An antagonistic relationship between two or more parties over intractable divergences regarding what is mutually signi cant to the parties involved. Con icts do not lend themselves to solutions solved by mere compromise. Can not be solved by a third party. Con ict can span over decades and can be still harboured by unresting animosity. All that a group deems important (values, needs, identities etc) Analyzing interests = understanding the reasons for con ict. Identity needs cannot be compromised and will be defended above all others. Membership to an identity group is essential in de ning con ict. Con ict occurs when ones identity is repressed or downgraded by another group. Religious af liation, ethnic background, language, sexual orientation, gender etc. Despite having different components of identity, if one is threatened it usually becomes a master status.
