In international politics as well as in civil society peace building advocacy, we need a deeper appreciation of a diversity of cultural approaches to peace. A heightened appreciation of local resources for peace could yield more sustainable peace building outcomes. Mission civilisatrice: ethnocentric ideas about remaking the world in our image. But cultural diversity is here to stay. Context may not be everything, but is really important. Culture as a resource: though culture is not some idealized source that has all the answers. In arguing that peace should be localized, that does not mean global efforts (e. g. the un) should not continue to be pursued. Protracted conflicts: the need for sustainable local solutions. Limits to intervention and transfer: when a large-scale problem occurs in the world, we concentrate on it for a short period of time, and then we move on to a new one. Developing a sense of empowerment and ownership as critical factors in peace building.
