Oct 6 2013 Physics Summary #4 Normal Force o The force that acts perpendicular to a surface o Using the box on a scale example, gravity is the force down on the scale while the normal force (reaction) is pointing in the oppose direction (the scale on the box). o Gravity is on the scale, normal is on the box Apparent Weight  W= mg  Force > mg = body feels heavier  Force < mg = body feels lighter Tension • rope must be pulled / assumed massless • tension is the same through rope • draw a FBD for each object and then equate the equations Pully’s  Attwood was credited with the invention  change direction of tension force but not magnitude Contact Forces  these are the pushing forces 
