Document Summary

The city of people movement was a reaction against the 20th century city planning. Many cities in the 20th century were formed as a reaction to industrialisation. Therefore the city of people movement was a reaction to the reaction of the industrial city. Most cities in the 20th century e. g. renaissance, utopian etc. did not care much about the cities prior to its existence. These cities opted to destroy the existence of the previous city and create a new urban form. This movement however aimed to improve cities that had already existed rather than destroy them. This philosophy therefore created a new way of thinking. The city of people movement respected existing urban environments and therefore planning intervention was small in scale and gradual. This is because there was a need to understand the history and dynamic of an urban area before intervening.
