Idea was that people dominate street front, not cars. Squares, perspectives/vistas emphasize public spaces to show public space as an attraction for people, emphasizing exclusive public space minimizes automobile. Failures of new urbanism: overemphasis on design rather than on lifestyle change. Implementation of land use ideas without matching transit infrastructure. Foremost creator and advocate of new urbanism believed suburb eliminated social component, communal aspect of neighbourhood living. Duany plater-zyberk firm in 1980: involved in hundreds of new urbanism type of development. Co-founder of the congress for the new urbanism in 1993. Many projects: san diego, ca, portland, or, etc. First new urbanism town; development began in 1981. Located on the florida panhandle, on the gulf of mexico. 80 acre resort, mainly single family dwelling, some apartments. Conceived to approximate the scale and character of historical southern towns. Featured in the film the truman show: reduces size of yards, accommodates higher densities.
