Natural resources, ecosystem services, and the tragedy of the commons. Through the commons game , the free rider problem becomes evident. Therefore, there is a tyranny of small decisions , where there is a discrepancy between individual short-term decisions and long-term collective decisions. Thinking of self vs thinking of group (choosing highest for you, ignoring/not considering what brings the group most) Free rider problem (benefits from use of resources without fully paying for it) Community members make independently use of forest. Community members earn more the more time they spend in the forest. Community members own more if the community makes less use of the forest. Benefits from use of resources w/o (fully) paying for it. Discrepancy between individual short-term decisions & long-term collective decisions. Increased benefit of resource exploitation earned by individual. Increased cost of resource exploitation is shared by community. Individual incentive to overexploit whole group overexploits.
