PLAN104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Smog, National Energy Program, Carbon Price
Document Summary
Canada wastes over half the energy it uses. Canada has a lot of oil trapped in soil and tar in alberta, and it"s very hard to separate them since it"s very capital and energy intensive to do so. Canadian crude oil is cheap, especially because of the discount. Lougheed called for a slow down in development of oil sands, since many expensive projects were considered but only one surface mining project at a time is enough, and cheaper. (5 multibillion projects were under consideration. Lower-cost underground projects could proceed at higher pace). It is extracted by placing a pipe in earth. Fracking (explosives to free up trapped natural gas) was used, but it is now banned in many places due to it being dangerous. Different electrcities are used in canada (eg: hydro in bc, mix of hydro, fossil, hydro and nuclear in ontario). Ontario"s long-term electricity plan is dependant on nuclear.
