PLAN110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Genius Loci, Representational State Transfer, Aldo Van Eyck
Document Summary
Environmental planning and design: explain though process (language/vocabulary architects use) The ultimate objective in many design is to balance unity (i. e. minimize boredom) with diversity (i. e. minimize chaos) and to respect the genius loci, the spirit of the place. Unity implies that there is some aspect of consistency. Diversity is where you add element that is somehow different without introducing chaos sense of place: architectural designers/landscape architects use: defend design, reflect local geography, time, culture where building is situated, capture essence of society. Principles of design axis (datum line): the ordering of artistic elements in a work that constitutes a harmonious whole necessary for the parts of a design to relate to one another and to the whole. Found in design where symbols of power are displayed. Used to bring emphasis/draw interest to a focal point. Bilateral or mirror image" symmetry is the easiest to use. Cannot exist without an axis of centre.
