Document Summary
Intrasexual selection: members of one sex compete to mate with members of opposite sex. Usually males compete (more intense; usually for women) Males also choose; but for long-term partner (not as much in short term) Intersexual selection: members of one sex choose members of opposite sex based on preferred characteristics. Females do compete (less intense), not for access to men but for high quality men. Explains sexual dimorphism: why males and females are different. The sex that makes the smaller investment competes for the sex that makes the larger investment: The sex that makes the larger investment will be more choosy when selecting partner(s). Because women invest more (internal fertilization - 10 months pregnancy) Seahorse: male invests more as male offer protection. Reproductive success limited by number of successful pregnancies: Male bodies/psychology built for competition with other men for women. Achievement oriented (gain satisfaction for simply working towards sth)
