Document Summary
Long term memory- unlimited, never reach full capacity, permanent, mostly organized into semantic meaning or phonetics. Ex: playing guitar, require manipulate digits in particular formation -> more practice the better. Ex: 2 handed back swing, ballet, tennis: conditioned reflexes- automatic physiological responses. Ex: when the bell rings go to class; have to learn conditions and practice. Prospective memory- things to do in the future. Ex: got to pick up the milk -> remember to pick up milk. Sensory register- large capacity, contains sensory information, brief retention of images (1/4 second: raw sensory information, most is dumped and some might be transferred to stm, forgotten. Long term memory- stm is transferred to ltm, unlimited capacity storage/permanent, Information is organized and indexed: encoding: semantic, ltm can be transferred to stm (pulled out) Influences what is transferred, what you pay attention too, selectively attend certain elements.
