Psych 101 - evolution & psychology 15th february. Selection - organisms exist in larger numbers than their environment can sustain: artificial selection: Explains domestication of plants & animals: natural selection: Most mutations are deleterious and selected out (negative selection), but some are neutral and a few are actually advantageous (positive selection). Mendel published in 1865-66, findings (cid:449)ere (cid:862)redisco(cid:448)ered(cid:863) in (cid:1005)9(cid:1004)(cid:1004). What we have are common ancestors, humans were never monkeys, We are not decided with the species of today, It is the survival of the fittest individuals not survival of the species. There is no competition between species, its within individuals of the same species. The theory has three principles that explain everything. Variations means that there are differences between the species (eye color, iq) Inheritance is that some characteristics will be passed (like eye color) and acquired characteristic will not be (hair dyed)
