Document Summary
Stores: retain info in memory w/o using it for any specific purpose. 3 stores include sensory memory, short term memory & long term memory. Control processes: shift info from one memory store to another. Info enters the sensory memory store through vision, hearing, attention selects which info will pass on to short term memory. Some information in stm goes through encoding: process of storing info in the ltm system. Retrieval: brings info from ltm back into stm. Sensory memory: accurately holds perceptual info for a very brief amount of time. Holds iconic memory, visual form of sensory memory for about 1/2-1 sec. Echoic memory, auditory form of sensory memory, held for longer (about 5 sec) Functions to hold info long enough for us to determine what to pay attention to. Iconic sensory memory holds images long enough to provide smooth, continuous perceptions.
