Document Summary

Gestalt grouping principles (part of low level vision) One of the simplest grouping principles is called grouping by proximity. A grid of dots can be viewed as a bunch of vertical lines of dots (because the dots are a lot closer together vertically than horizontally). Grouping by similarity: we tend to group together objects that are similar (i. e. groups of dots that are the same colour). Side effects of grouping (part of low level vision) Motion is important because motion can define form and aid in object perception. You tend to group together objects that move together (movement by common fate). Kinetic depth effect: refers to the phenomenon whereby the three-dimensional structural form of an object can be perceived when the object is moving. In the absence of other visual depth cues, this might be the only perception mechanism available to infer the object"s shape. Biological motion: we can identify person based on movement (johansson figures).
