Stimulus for sense of olfaction: molecules that float in the air and water and they travel right into your nasal passages. Some substances do not give off much molecules= cannot smell them well. Substance as to give of vapors and must be fat soluble, receptors are surrounded by fat like substances that absorb fat if it isn t fat soluble it is hard to pick up. Fuctions: nostrils: let the odor in but control the rate that the smell moves across your olfactory system. Draw air in with a sniff, but if you want olfactory system to work best you must draw the air at a rate of about 30l per minute. If you do not sniff rapidly it does not work enough. Responsible for rapidly expelling things that are irritating ex sneezing nasal cycle: left and right nostrils take turns being dominate- shift of 2-3 hours than switch.
