The id usually does what it wants, whenever it wants: the ego- referees between the conscious, preconscious and unconscious minds. Also knows that relying totally on the id (being selfish in satisfying pleasures at any time) is not socially acceptable. The ego develops when children are between 3 and 4 years of age; partly conscious, deals with demands of reality.
