Document Summary

Short time after birth, they not only respond to stimuli but do selectively in ways that seem well designed for learning. Babies gaze longer at new stimuli than at familiar ones. Habituation -when shown a pattern babies look at it intently at first and then over the course of minutes, look at is less and less. Dishabituation new pattern is substituted for old one, infants immediately. Example - 4-month-olds learned quickly to make a particular movement to turn on a increase their looking time. Infants begin to show a special interest in aspects of the environment that they can control small array of lights, but lost interest and responded only occasionally after they became good at this task. When the conditions were changed so that a different movement was needed to turn on the lights, the infants regained interest and made another burst of responses.
