Document Summary

Usually treated with a combination of drug therapy and cognitive therapy. Usually treated with both medication and cognitive therapy. Remember that the critical issue for depressed people is their thinking (they tend to make a catastrophe of all the events in their lives) Cognitive therapy focuses on the thoughts that depressed people have. 15% - 20% of people seeking therapy are experiencing major depression: they usually don"t respond to drugs or therapy and often become suicidal. Used as punishment in the 40s and 50s to control patients in mental hospitals. Discovered that depressed people sometimes got better from it. Not they put the individual under anesthesia and apply electric currents to one side of the brain or the other. Still very controversial since it is unclear as to how it actually works. !1 source: university of waterloo psychology 101 course online. The frequency of the treatments varies depending on the individual.
