Psychoactive drugs - chemical substances acting on the cns that alter mood, perception, memory, or behaviour. 4 main classes: stimulants - increase cns activity; people who use these (nicotine, caffeine, cocaine, amphetamines) really like them! Euphoric experience, e. t. c: depressants - decrease cns activity, opiates - pain relief & euphoria, psychedelics - distort sensory info. What were the 3 main motivations for use: spiritual (entheogens ex. Chew or smoke leaves - chewing is enough to get stimulating effect.
