The stages of childbirth: first stage: dilation and effacement of the cervix, uterine contractions gradually become more frequent and powerful causing cervix to open (dilate) and thin (efface) forming clear channel from uterus into birth canal or vagina, transition: climax of stage 1 is brief phase of transition in which frequency and strength of contractions are at peak and cervix opens completely, occurs as uterine contractions increase in strength and frequency, stage culminates in transition, brief period in which contractions are at their peak and the cervix opens completely, second stage: mother feels an urge to bear down with her abdominal muscles and baby is born, pushing: each contraction mother pushes, force baby down the birth canal, crowning: vaginal opening had stretched around entire head, near end of 2nd stage, shoulders emerge follow quickly by the rest of and head appears baby"s body, final stage: placenta is delivered.
