PSYCH211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Tape Measure, Discriminant Validity, Longitudinal Study
Document Summary
Systematic observation watching children and carefully recording what they do or say; best practice. Naturalistic observation children are observed as they behave spontaneously in real-life situation. In order for researchers to perform an observation they have to choose the correct variables to record. Structured observation the researcher creates a setting that is likely to elicit the behaviour of interest; used for studying behaviours that are difficult to observe naturally. Researchers have difficulties recording a child"s behaviour with their siblings in private settings. They my try to bring the siblings and child in to play a game, but it must not alter the behaviour of interest or expose participants to undue risk. Strange situation (mary ainsworth), and structured observed technique researchers document children"s reactions at each step to being left alternately with mother, a stranger, alone and then with mother again; classification system for children"s attachment behaviours.
