PSYCH218 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Learned Helplessness, Expressive Suppression, Afterlife
Document Summary
There are three assumed human needs: meaning we want to understand our surroundings. We can define religion in three ways: religion as an ascribed importance to an entity . This gives religion its motive, power, and energy. This is why religion has the ability to reorder someone"s life: religion in the absence of objectively justifiable criteria. Most of what we know comes from two sources: direct observation and social consensus. Religion is not necessarily supported by either of these. Faith is an individual and private experience and if a belief is strong enough, it can bypass observation and consensus: subsequently attempting to use or relate to religion. This depends on what the entity is and lays the background on what religion is. For example, mondo elvis is an exploitation documentary film that examines the community of elvis" followers. They attempted to symbolically relate to elvis with relics and icons.
