Death: people generated a lot of symbols (conventional a funeral/angels, unconventional when someone dies you bring food over, or any idea that"s random and has an association to them that doesn"t fit in the normal category) Dying: responses were usually associated the dying process with pain/suffering, and a lot of medical stuff. People listed off a lot of emotions and the great majority were negative when asked about death/dying. What is life: life-functional theories (describe life in terms of function): something is in the doing process, there is a process involved. Two classic perspectives: nutrition/reproduction happening, its either reproducing or actively taking in resources from the physical environment. Silk moths have a limited window to reproduce, if they don"t then they starve to death or get killed. Worker bees cant reproduce but are still considered alive: sensation/responsiveness, organism is doing something and responding to its environment. Their sensory system isn"t responding but they"re still alive.
