Lecture 2:
Variance: not everyone is the same (job performance, job satisfaction)
Talkativeness
Intelligence
Without variance, there is no personnel psychology, or psychology, or science
Standard deviation = variance
The average distance away
Standard deviation^2 = variance
Standard deviation = sqrt variance
Prof will often use these terms interchangeably
Variance/standard deviation how different people are
Example:
We want to compare two students
Student A took the SAT
Max score 800
Student B took the ACT
Max score 36
Student A: 600
Student B: 27
Both earned 75% of the maximum points available
The distance is the same but there is no true zero (jnterval scales)
MEAN SD
SAT 500 100
ACT 18 6
Student A: (600-500)/100 = +1.00
Student B: (27-18)/6= +1.50
