Key Terms
- Social class = Any important means of expressing distinctions within society
- Status = Positive or negative estimation of honour/prestige received by individuals or
positions.
o Involves the perception of how much one is valued by others
o Factors: Wealth, religion, race, social skills, physical attractiveness
- SES = Occupation, Education level, Income, et also iludes reputatio, possessios…
- Poverty = State of one who lacks usual/socially acceptable amount of money or material
possessions.
o Can also indicate inequalities around social and cultural indicators (ex. Mortality
rates, edu attainment, housing conditions, leisure participation)
o 2 subtypes:
Relative: Less than those in same social context
Absolute: Not enough to survive
Poverty in Canada
- 4.5 million people low income, 3 million in poverty.
- 1 in 5 people in poverty are children
- 1 in 4 aboriginal children in poverty
Causes and Impacts of Poverty
- Causes:
o Individual/Pathological causes (choices, behavior, or ability)
o Familial causes (family/upbringing)
o Agency causes (actions of others ex. War, gov, economy)
o Structural causes (result of inability to access resources in society)
- Impacts:
o Not having safe place to sleep
o Not having access to medical care, edu support, nutrition
o Not experiencing trust
o Challenges with confidence, self-esteem, and rels
o Not having resources for or access to meaningful leisure

o Affects many factors such as mental illness, school dropouts, life expectancy, etc.
Accessing Support
- Food banks/programs
o Share hampers of food/personal care products
o Prepare and serve meals at soup kitchens
