In module 4, you will be introduced to various cultural impacts of tourism. After successfully
completing this module, you should be able to do the following.
• Explain the nature of socio-cultural impacts of tourism
• Discuss the various positive and negative cultural impacts of tourism on destinations
• Explain the various ways in which adverse socio-cultural of tourism can be mitigated

1. Introduction
• Tourism relies upon simultaneous production and consumption
• Implications
o Contact between host and guest may occur in three ways (De Kadt, 1979)
▪ Tourists purchase good and services
▪ Tourists and locals use the same services and facilities
▪ Tourism and locals meet purposely to exchange ideas and information
o Beneficial or detrimental impacts of these scenarios
2. Definition
• Changes brought about by tourism development in the destinations’ quality of life, labour
division, value system, individual behaviour, family relationships, social organizations,
community lifestyles, moral principles, creative expression and traditional ceremonies
(Cohen, 1984)
• The impacts of tourism on those components of hosts’ life that constitute the unique
culture of the given destination
3. Definition
• Social impacts tend to include the changes occurring in the everyday life of the
community and the adaptation to the presence and operation of the tourism sector
• Cultural impacts are changes in the set of values and norms of the local community
which simultaneously have an impact on the social relationships, art and material culture
4. Issues
• Focus of socio-cultural impacts tends to be on the host-community
• Less attention has been paid to the tourist population

5. Negative Socio-Cultural Impacts
• Crime — tourists can be victims of crimes
