Each year = child adds about 5-8 cm in height and 2. 7 kgs in weight. 18-24 months: runs, walks well, climbs stairs with both feet, shows clear hand preference, picks up things w/o overbalancing. 2-3 years: runs easily, hauls and shoves big toys, picks up small objects. 3-4: skips on two feet, walks on tiptoe, steers tricycle, cuts paper with scissors. 4-5: walks up and down stairs one foot per step, strikes ball with bat. 5-6: skips on alternate feet, slides, swings, plays ball games well, threads needles. Older preschoolers (beyond 3) benefit more from training than younger children. Lateralization: process where brain functions are divided b/w two hemispheres of the cerebral cortex corpus callosum = structure that connects the right and left hemispheres of the cerebral cortex. Matures more during early childhood, dictated by our genes.
