Underestimated cognitive capacity of infants, wrongly equated infant"s lack of physical ability w/ lack of cognitive understanding. Imitation: infants as young as 6 weeks of age can defer imitation for at least a few minutes, deferred imitation = occur earlier. Makes it clear that infants can and do learn specific behaviours through modelling. Object concept (3 months) = infant"s understanding of the nature of objects and how they behave. Spelke = believes babies are born with certain built-in assumptions that guide their interactions with objects. Object individuation: process by which an infant differentiates and recognizes distinct objects based on their mental images of objects in the environment infants use three broad categories to individuate objects: spatiotemporal info. = info. about location and motion of objects (4 month) property info.
