Sds 150r - lecture 11 - physical and cognitive development in adolescence. Hormonal changes = trigger development of sex organs. Primary sex characteristics: growth of testes and penis in boys, ovaries and uterus, vagina in girls. = breast development in girls, voice pitch changes and beard growth in boys, body hair growth in both sexes. Sexual development in girls: menarche = beginning of menstrual cycle at average of 12. 7 secular trend: decline in the average age of menarche. Sexual development in boys: spermarche = first ejaculation occurs b/w 13 and 14 production of viable sperms happen a few months after the first ejaculation. Girls who develop earlier = no more problems with self-esteem/academics, fewer behavioural problems than later-developing peers. Earlier boys develop, more positive their body image, the better they do in school, less trouble they get into, more friends they have. Girls = attain most of their adult height by 16. Boys = grow until they are 18-20.
