What is love: socially constructed -> shaped by, media, gendered practices, cultural beliefs. Divorce risks: having divorced parents (you are the person that found it difficult to resolve problems with your partner, marry young, being previously divorced/ marrying a divorced partner. Living together before engagement: having a child before marriage, being much older/younger than spouse, marrying someone of different race/religion (can be a hazard, but not fatal, marrying someone with a child from another relationship. Reality: equality, fairness, egalitarianism, cherlin: person fulfillment , having & raising children, work, everyday family life rooted in realities of juggling all the balls, disagreements, passion wanes, attachment needed. Why doesn"t she leave? : cycle of violence-abuse, apology, reconciliation-repeat over and over. Frog in the pot (interpersonal violence is gradually built up and to the point that they cannot leave the marriage anymore and the situation is getting worse: fear of reprisal, homicides associated with leaving.
