Formal violation in act, motivation of intent and the type (category) (3 ways of defining crime) 3 agents involved in addressing crime in society from beginning of act to resolution. First is role of police of society. Two roles of that function are enforcement and apprehension. Second is the courts and all of the members of the court. All aimed at assessment of guilt or innocence. Punishment system works towards retribution or vengeance, deterrence, rehabilitation of the offender, protection of society. Merton"s strain theory: scope and character of deviance depend on how easy it is for one person to use the recognized means of society to attain the recognized goals of society. Accepting goals of society and accepting means that society gives us to attain them takes us to conformity. Red squares: merton says that deviant people live here.
