Soc 327 policing in a democratic society. The historical roots of the modern police force: no formal police organization until 1829 with the passing of metropolitan police act. Feudal system based on society where people lived and worked in agricultural; not many large town or cities: control of land by feudal lords or land lords. Villages required men of 15-16 had to be armed, take turns for the night watch, catch criminals. Constables were selected; check status of strangers. Sheriffs were selected by the lord; collect taxes: social control was informal or semi-formal. Industrial revolution started displacing people and putting them into cities: new machinery and technology; made manual labour inefficient, factories started to develop in areas where they could trade; access to sea. Ie london: rural areas = community. Control with custom and informal controls: cities = society. Crime rates rose, civil disobedience; therefore need more formal social controls.
