SOC101 Lecture 8: ONLINE Week 8 / Module 8 - Religion and Society
Document Summary
Almost all founding gures of sociology were aware of the process of secularization and its importance, and predicted that societies would become increasingly secular (viewed it as a key element of the larger process of modernization) Rationalization: increased use of reason to guide actions and activities, attempts to replace tradition, superstitions, and magical notions, rise of science. Differentiation: religion and the state, amount of control religion has over the state, catholic church used to control education and healthcare, with modernization, new institutions have separated from the control of the church. There are some societies in the world that appear to be totally non-religious (eg. denmark, england, japan) Some societies are extremely religious and pluralistic (eg. united states: pluralistic: practicing a variety of religions within their societies. The us is one of the largest religious and pluralistic nations in the world.
