SOC221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Data Visualization, Microsoft Office 2007, Nvivo
Document Summary
Outline: theory/conceptual visualizations, qualitative data visualizations, quantitative data visualizations. Why visualizations: vital tool to present arguments/findings/significances of data, efficient way to present lots of information. Good visualizations: simple/clear, looks good, 5 sec or less rule, looks professional. Generating figures for qualitative findings: old school: Using shapes and textboxes in word processing software. Visual tools in software such as nvivo. Presenting qualitative results in figures: figure should include; Title (often figure 1, figure 2, etc. ) A brief, clear description of what"s in the graph. The concepts in the figure of course. Everything independently and clearly indicated in the figure. Presenting quantitative results in tables: paragraphs with loads of information are not practical, it is better to use a table to display data, tables should include: Title (often table 1, table 2, etc. ) A brief description of what"s in the table. The year or period of the data collection. If a cross-tab: dependent variables in columns, independent variables in rows.
