Population: represents the entire collection of units that we are interested in. Target population: complete collection of units about which we want to draw conclusions. Study population: group of individuals that we can actually study: study error may occur if the study population is not a good representation of the target population. Statistical inference: process of drawing conclusions about the population based on the sample that we collect. Data: plural of datum, something given : collection of numbers or other pieces of information to which meaning has been attached, data results from making observations. Individuals: objects described by a set of data (ex. people, animals, plants, etc. ) Variable: any characteristic of an individual, whose value may change from one object to another in the population: denote variables using capital letters from the end of the alphabet. The values of a quantitative variable are recorded in a unit of measurement (ex. seconds, kilograms, etc. )
