Done in clinical setting to guide practice: evidence-based practice (ebp): use of best clinical evidence in making care decisions. Future directions: continue focus on ebp for the best outcome for the pt, stronger evidence through confirmatory strategies, expanded local research in health care setting (ex. Magnet schools: continued emphasis on systematic reviews, expanded dissemination of research findings, clinical significance and patient input. Increased focus on cultural issues and health disparities. 5 areas of focus for ninr strategic plan: promoting health and preventing disease, symptom management and self-management, end of life and palliative care, the development of nurse scientists. Innovation: tradition and authority, clinical experience, trial and error, intuition. Sources of evidence for nursing practice: clinical experience: familiar source of knowledge. Recognize regularities and make predictions based on observations. Cannot be readily transferred to other contexts: trial and error: practical but often fallible and inefficient. Intuition: type of knowledge that cannot be accounted through reasoning or prior instruction.
