Basic film terms: framing the image aspect ratios: standard academy ratio & widescreen ratios. Back when films were played on 4 by 3 screens it cut of significant parts of the film shape masks and split frames. In the 40"s it was a old fashioned technique. Clip: breathless, uses an iris for nostalgia, again for nostalgia. There is also multiple framed imagery relationship between the 4 images. The 2 extreme wide shots stacked on each other: onscreen and offscreen space: different kinds of offscreen space: The space beyond each to the 4 edges of the frame. Films attract attention to onscreen space by having characters look of screen. Got to see what character is looking at. The main way to make it seamless is to show interaction by narrative and character psychology. Clip: citizen kane, shows space through mirrors, seeing the woman"s reflection.
