Spiritual beings were anything that had a soul - rid yourself of the appetites and desires that were a part of the physical realm. Humans were a part of both realms because they also had a soul. Within the labels, there were subdivisions based on rank, class (humans), food chain (animals), growth (plants) etc. The physical world is in a state of becoming, the spiritual world is a state of being, you are and you always were and will be. James ussher wanted to know how old the world was - the only reliable source around was the bible.
