Visual studies is not only what the image is telling you but also the context it is in. In what ways was the berger reading related to the approach visual studies take - in the reading berger spoke about reproduction. The link between a picture of a tree and the word tree is arbitrary, there is no real direct link which connects the two- no self evident relationship between the two. 2nd theory = denotation and connotation by barthes. Connotation - a house and a home are the same thing but home has a different meaning when you think about it (culturally and historically speci c meaning) 3rd theory= peirce has the triangle theory of sign object and interpretant.
